1) You open a drawer and find three items: a map, a broken radio, and something alien. Write a detailed paragraph that includes at least one compound sentence (with and, but, or) and one complex sentence (with because, if, when). 2) Describe the ruined reception area. Use at least one sentence with “and” and one with “because” to add detail. 3) You find a smashed computer. Write a short piece explaining what you would try to do with it. Include a sentence with “or” to show two options, and a sentence with “if” to explain what could happen next. 4) Your group is arguing about whether to stay in the office or leave. Write a persuasive paragraph with at least one sentence using “but” and one using “because” to support your opinion. 5) You find two things: a diary full of secrets and a bottle of water. Write a paragraph explaining which you would take, using at least one sentence with “or” and one with “because.” 6) Write the opening of a short story where aliens appear at the reception doors. Use at least three different joining words (e.g. and, but, because, if, when). Try to build suspense with longer, detailed sentences. 7) The phone suddenly rings — write one suspenseful sentence that uses and/but/or to make it compound, and because/if/when to make it complex.
