Effleurage - is a soft (light) continuous, stroking movement applied with fingers or palms in a slow, rhythmic manner. The guiding movement is soothing and relaxing. The cushions of fingertips are used on smaller surfaces, and palms are used on larger surfaces. Every massage usually begins and ends with effleurage. It is used on forehead, face, scalp, and back, shoulders, neck, chest, arms, and hands for its soothing and relaxing effects., Petrissage - A compression technique that includes kneading, squeezing and pinching, this affects the deeper muscle tissue of the face. These movements stimulate the underlying tissues. The skin and flesh are grasped between the thumb and forefingers. As the tissues are lifted from the underlying structures, they are squeezed, rolled, and pinched with a light, firm pressure., Friction - Is an invigorating deep rubbing movement that stimulates the circulation and glandular activity of the skin. It can be performed in a circular manner or a criss-cross manner with the fingers working in opposition to each other. Pressure is maintained on the skin while the fingers or palms are moved over the underlying structure. Circular friction movements are usually used on scalp, arms, and hands. Light circular movements are used on face and neck., Tapotement - Also known as Percussion, consists of fast tapping, slapping, and hacking movements. This technique improves circulation by stimulating the diffusion of the capillary network. It helps nourish the skin by releasing nutrients. This technique also purifies the system by releasing carbon dioxide and other waste material, Vibration - Is a rapid shaking movement in which the esthetician typically uses their uses body and shoulders-not just the fingertips- to create the movement. It is accomplished by rapid muscular contractions in arms. The balls of the fingertips are pressed firmly on the point of application. Vibration is a highly stimulating movement, but it should be used sparingly and never for more than a few seconds in any one spot., Acupressure - Is a massage technique derived from Chinese medicine and consists of applying pressure to specific points of the face and body(acupressure points) to release muscle tension, restore balance and stimulate chi(life force, energy). Shiatsu is a Japanese technique using acupressure massage points., Pressure point massage - Applies pressure to pressure points during massage., Aromatherapy - Uses essential oils applied to the skin during massage movements., Manual lymph drainage massage - Uses gentle, rhythmic pressure on the lymphatic system to detoxify and remove waste materials from the body more quickly, Foot & Hand Reflexology - Applies pressure to the feet based on a system of zones and areas on the feet that directly correspond to the anatomy of the body.
