Australia’s early European arrivals were not able to create a treaty with the local Aboriginal people in order to acquire land, so the idea that it belonged to no one became a tool, rather than a law, that was used by British settlers to push First Nations peoples off their ancestral Country, Colonialism - the policy or practice of acquiring full or partial political control over another country, occupying it with settlers and exploiting it economically., Imperialism - a policy of extending a country's power and influence through colonization, use of military force, or other means., Frontier Wars - violent conflict between European settlers and Indigenous peoples after the arrival of the First Fleet in 1788., Pastoralist - a sheep or cattle farmer, Squatter - a person who had occupied pastoral land not granted to them by colonial authorities. Often the first white settlers in an area., Smallpox - contagious, life threatening viral disease with symptoms that include fever and pustules that usually leave permanent scars., QLD Native Mounted Police (QNMP) - (1849 until 1904). Detachments of Aboriginal troopers led by white officers. Chosen as a Turrwan to conduct restorative justice for the shooting and poisoning of Aboriginal people by settlers in colonial Brisbane. For over 10 years starting from 1843, Dundalli attacked settlers, conducted robbery causing serious bodily harm and killed livestock. Aboriginal people saw him as a resistance leader, but the new European settlers saw him as a criminal and murderer.,
