The blackberry kiss is important to Sal for several reasons.: One reason the blackberry kiss is important is because it connects Sal to her mother., On page 114 it says, "Mixed in with each tree's own taste was the slight taste of blackberries.", This shows that every tree Sal kisses reminds her of her mother, just like the sugar maple with the blackberry stain., Sal's mother had to leave to find herself for several reasons.: One reason Sugar had to find herself was to see who she really was, besides a wife and mother., In the text Sal's mother wants to find her cousin to, "tell me what I'm really like.", This shows that Sal's mother was dealing with such grief after losing the baby that she needed to discover who else she could be., Sal and Phoebe had similar reactions to their mothers leaving.: The both found something important of their mothers and pointed out to their fathers that they wouldn't leave that behind., In the text Phoebe says, "My mother's favorite white cardigan! Would she leave this behind?" while Sal says, "Would mom leave her favorite chicken?", Both girls are referring to a favorite sweater and chicken, but what they really meant was would their mothers leave them., Sal has changed in several ways over the course of the story.: One way Sal has changed is that she now doesn't flinch when people touch her., On page 115 Ben pretends to read Sal's palm and says, "The good news is that you let me hold your hand for almost five minutes and you didn't flinch once.", This shows that Sal is starting to open up to people instead of shutting herself off., There are many themes in the story Walk Two Moons.: One theme of Walk Two Moons is not to let little things in life bother you, but instead focus on the things that matter, like family and friends., The third message on Phoebe's doorstep says, "In the course of a lifetime, what does it matter?" Sal goes on to say, "I did not think cheerleading tryouts would matter, but I was not so sure about yelling at your mother.", This means that something little, like losing the nail polish remover or cheerleading tryouts, will not matter years from now, but how you treat people will. ,
