constitution - The supreme law of the United States of America. All states must follow the Constitution. It is a set of basic rules and laws that create the legal foundation for a government, organization, or other group. It explains what the government can do and what it is responsible for (defines the powers and responsibility of the government), and it also protects certain rights for the people., amendment - An amendment is a formal revision or addition to the US Constitution. The Constitution is a living document and it can be amended at any time if ¾ of the states approve of the proposed changes., Bill of Rights - The first ten amendments to the US Constitution. The Bill of Rights outlines personal freedoms and Americans' rights in relation to their government to ensure these rights were protected., Legislative Branch - The Legislative Branch consists of the House of Representatives and the Senate, which together form the United States Congress. The Constitution grants Congress the sole authority to enact legislation (make laws), regulate commerce (authority to regulate trade that crosses state lines) and declare war., Executive Branch - The power of the Executive Branch is mainly the president who also acts as head of state and Commander-in-Chief of the armed forces. The President is responsible for implementing and enforcing the laws written by Congress. The Vice President is also part of the Executive Branch, ready to assume the Presidency should the need arise., Judicial Branch - Members of the Judicial Branch are appointed by the President and confirmed by the Senate. They are justices of the Supreme Court: the highest court in the land. It is their job to interpret the Constitution. Usually there are 9 justices on the court., Compromise - To compromise is to make a deal between different parties where each party gives up part of their demand. In arguments, compromise means finding agreement through communication., Checks and Balances - A system of government embedded into the US Constitution that prevents any one branch of government or person from becoming too powerful. The system gives each branch of government the power to check the actions of the other branches. This is an intentional separation of powers and therefore the government is split into 3 branches (Executive, Legislative, & Judicial) to maintain these systems., Electoral College - A body of people representing the states of the US, who formally cast votes for the election of the president and vice president. When people in each state vote, they are voting for the electors of their state to choose the same candidate as them. The number of electors per state is based on the population of that state., Civil Discourse - Respectful conversation aimed at fostering understanding and constructive communication, where individuals within a group share different perspectives to help solve a problem as a team.,
