In AD 865, a Great Heathen Army invaded England. Guthrum was one of the Viking leaders. The Vikings were planning to make England their new home.  , In 866, the Viking army attacked the Anglo-Saxon kingdoms of Wessex, Northumbria and Mercia. The Vikings captured the city of York, renaming it Yorvik. This became the Viking capital city. , In AD 869, the Vikings invaded East Anglia, killing King Edmund. Edmund became a martyr because he died refusing to give up his Christian beliefs. The Vikings tortured Edmund, before beheading him. They threw Edmund’s head among the brambles so his head would not be easy to find., The legend goes that after being killed and beheaded, his supporters began searching for King Edmund’s missing head. A wolf called out to them and they found the it guarding the kings head. The head was reunited with his body and they fused back together, allowing Edmund to be laid to rest in one piece., Edmund was buried near the town of Bury St Edmunds, Suffolk. .
