Biome - Large area on the Earth's surface defined by the type of vegetation there. Each biome is a result of the prevailing climatic conditions., Forest - Dominated by trees and woody vegetation. Cover one-third of the Earth's land mass., Tropical forest - Warm, wet conditions, e.g. rainforests., Boreal forest - cool, wet conditions, e.g. coniferous , Grasslands - Dominated by grasses rather than shrubs and large trees. Mostly found between deserts and forests. , Savannah - Found where there are distinct seasons., Temperate grasslands - Found in cooler regions with less seasonal rainfall., Deserts - An area that receives less than 250mm of rain per year. , Tundra - Soil is frozen for most of the year resulting in short growing seasons when the ground thaws. Vegetation is limited to small shrubs, herbs, grasses, moss and lichen., Freshwater - Having low salt concentration. Vegetation is limited to plants that cannot survive salty (marine) conditions. E.g. Ponds, lakes, streams, rivers, wetlands., Marine - High salt concentration. Vegetation is diverse (mangroves, colonies of sea grasses). E.g. oceans, coral reefs, estuaries.,
