Strengths: Using the fMRI scanner means this DV provided the researchers with valid, objective, quantitative data of the amygdala meaning they could carry out effective correlational statistical analysis., This lab experiment was highly controlled as the Environment was standardised for all participants and given the same items to rate in each condition., The procedure was also standardised as to the level of time each item was presented and the duration of the interval between presentations so it has high internal validity. Therefore we can infer cause and effect., Although there is some criticism of using fMRI scanning as signals are relative to the individual, this experiment used repeated measures which minimised this drawback as each ppts scores was compared against their own, It was not possible for demand characteristics to occur and so this increases the validity of the data., Weaknesses: The task and being scanned whilst doing it is not an everyday activity so lacks ecological validity, The sample was 10 right-handed females and therefore there were participant variables that could distort the research and mean it lacks population validity and cannot be generalised to the outside world., We need to be careful we don’t infer too much as there are still many unknowns about locations of specific behaviours in the brain,
