It can be worked on the solid newel, or fixed on, Handrail - A rail that follows the same pitch as the staircase and provides support for stair users, Baulsters - Short vertical members that form the infill between the string and handrail, String Capping - A component planted on the top of the string to increase its thickness to allow balusters to be fixed, where the balusters are thicker than the string, Balustrade - The combination of the handrail, balusters, string capping and string that forms the protection to the open side of a flight of stairs, Nosing - The section of tread that overhangs the riser, Shaped Bottom Step - A decorative bottom step that projects beyond the face of the bottom newel, intended to improve access to the bottom of the flight, Spandrel - The triangular area under a flight of stairs. It can be framed in to form a cupboard. It is then known as spandrel framing, Apron Lining - A lining applied to provide a neat finish to the face of the floor joists within a stairwell, Pitch Line - An imaginary line which touches all the nosing's in the flight,
