Niche - all the conditions and resources required for an organism to survive and reproduce (AKA a species ‘role’ in the ecosystem). Could include things like how and what is feeds on, how it reproduces, what is excretes., Habitat - The place where an organism lives , Biodiversity - The range and variety of living organisms within a particular area., Biomass - The total mass of living material, normally measured in a specific area over a given period of time., Conservation - method of maintaining ecosystems and the living organisms that occupy them. It requires planning and organisation to make best use of resources while preserving the natural landscape and wildlife., Ecosystem - A biological community of interacting organisms and their physical environment., Community - All the populations of different species living and interacting together in an ecosystem., Succession - The change in structure and species composition (i.e the species that occupy it) of a ecological community over time., Primary Succession - the progressive colonisation of bare rock or other barren terrain by living organisms. Happens on land that is newly formed/exposed i.e. volcano eruption. There is no soil or organic material to start with., Secondary Succession - the recolonisation of an area after an early community has been removed or destroyed. This happens on land that's been cleared of all the plants/animal species but soil remains i.e. bare earth left after forest fire or deforestation., Climax community - the organisms that make up the stable, final, community that exists in a balanced equilibrium., Hostile/harsh - when abiotic conditions in an environment are at the extremes., Pioneer species - a species that can colonise bare rock or ground., Population - a group of individuals of the same species that occupy a habitat at the same time., Species - a group of similar organisms that can interbreed to produce fertile offspring., Adaptation - behavioural, physiological or structural feature of an organism that makes it more likely to survive,
