A student attends class every day, but is still struggling to apply the learned content. The teacher invites him repeatedly to attend lunch tutoring and he promises that he will, but fails to show up every time. The teacher attempts to reach the parents, but no one replies. How should the teacher support this student?, At the end of a work day when I need to do high-quality planning, tutoring, or grading, I am often extremely drained and make ridiculous mistakes that wind up haunting me later. Like switching the colors of a colored answer key so all the students were horribly confused the next day. Not ideal!! How do I give my brain a jump when it is dead?Amdy, If you discover a small but meaningful mistake in your materials, what is the best way to pause all the students, address the mistake, and move on?, Balthazar was a highly motivated student in the fall semester. He always got above an 85 in each marking period. Then in the spring semester, he stops turning in major assignments and is routinely off task. He begins to fail the class even though his content understanding remains high. In a conference, when asked why his behavior and performance has changed, he says that the class is boring because there are too many projects. He says he likes to read about topics to learn about them, but does not like to do the projects. Basically, Balthazar prefers a traditional style of learning rather than a project-based learning style. What do you say to Balthazar?Byron, How can we support students who require remedial support with phonics/handwriting and typing/computer navigating skills. Are there ways to explicitly teach these skills or assist students in learning these skills? Should this be addressed in a whole group setting individually on a needs basis? Should this occur during class time or outside of class time?, Starting new students in the middle of units or after having missed previous work and starting during a culminating activity., Students are learning how to apply a new skill (not telling you which one to leave this anonymous 😉). I model how to do one question, students copy the example. I model how to do another one but receive more input from the students. Then I asked students to individually do one question. 10/30 students still have no clue where to start. What do I do?, Does anyone have strategies for passing back paper assignments efficiently? I had a folder for each student but found it to be really time consuming to sort papers into the folders. When I plan to pass back papers individually during class, I'll often be too busy and realize I forgot by the end of class. I know a lot of students are sensitive about keeping their grades private, so I'd like to avoid having students pass back graded papers if possible., I need to think of do-now formats that will energize the class and include a content or a skill. Some classes are already too quiet so I do not need the do-now to be a quieting activity, I need it to wake them up., What are some ways you help students self-reflect? Do you use surveys? Do you have small group discussions with guided questions? After they self-reflect, how do you help them create next steps for themselves? Does anyone have a good way to check in to see how they are following up?, How to eliminate lateness to class, How can we read novels, or even just longer and denser short stories, with students in a class that only meets for a single period? There isn't enough time for students to read the entire book or story in class and then also teach them new analysis skills. How can we hold students accountable for doing reading outside of class? I understand the need to be equitable and mindful of students' lives and responsibilities outside of school, but I also think it sets a low standard to pass students at higher English levels or graduate students without requiring them to complete some reading outside of class and setting the expectation that students have responsibility to prepare for class discussions., Sidique (comprehension, SEL, foundational literacy skills), My mystery is related to multiple choice questions. On both the ELA Regents and the AP English exam, there are just so, so many Tier 2 vocabulary words in the questions themselves, and for many of them there is no way to predict which will be on the test. Anybody got vocab acquisition strategy ideas? I'm thirsty., Nancy was taking a timed quiz. The teacher said that there were 20 minutes in which to complete the quiz. All of the students finished except for Nancy who had turned off the countdown timer on her computer so she couldn't see it. When the quiz ended, visibly angry, Nancy asked for more time, although the answers were revealed when the time ran out. All of the other students left their timer on. How do I respond to Nancy?, What are your favorite ways to teach a whole-class novel? Do you have students read the entire book in class? If not, how to you hold students accountable for doing reading outside of class? How do you balance the time students spend on basic comprehension questions and checks for understanding of the novel in general with deeper analysis of the narrative elements of the novel?.
